Battalions
The number of the battalions deployed indicates their subordination to one of the twelve, later 14 divisions of the field army. The Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion 1 was under z. B. the 1st Panzer Division , the 7th Panzer Reconnaissance Battalion of the 7th Panzer Division, etc. In this sense, the 8th Division was the 1st Mountain Division . This division was therefore subordinate to the Mountain Armored Reconnaissance Battalion 8, whereby the prefix results from the subordination to the Mountain Division, but the battalion itself was counted unreservedly to the armored reconnaissance force. The 9th Division was the 1st Airborne Division . However, this was only subordinated to an airborne reconnaissance company (Luftlandpanzeraufklungskompanie 9); an (airborne) tank reconnaissance battalion 9 was therefore not set up.
The two tank reconnaissance battalions established in East Germany after 1990 did not initially receive a designation corresponding to this scheme, partly because the newly established divisions initially did not operate as the 13th and 14th divisions; Instead, the two battalions were initially given the numbers 70 and 80, which arose from their military areas VII and VIII. These names were later adapted accordingly and followed the conventions of the other battalions.
With the significant downsizing of the army and the associated restructuring beginning around the mid-1990s, this stringent designation convention was repealed. For reasons of tradition, the battalions mostly kept their names when changing positions. The battalion number of the remaining tank reconnaissance battalions before this type of troop was integrated into the army reconnaissance force therefore mostly only indicated the origin of the battalion, but mostly no longer its actual subordination to one of the divisions. With the formation of the Army Reconnaissance Force , most of the remaining armored reconnaissance units and units were renamed the Reconnaissance Battalion and Reconnaissance Company . However, your number was mainly retained for reasons of tradition.

Independent companies
In addition to the battalions listed in full above, there were various independent tank reconnaissance companies that are not listed here. Among these Standen a brigade they were usually referred to according to the following scheme: The tank reconnaissance company XX0 was the elucidation of the company Brigade XX (Examples: Panzer reconnaissance company 210 → 21st Panzer Brigade . Armored reconnaissance training company 90 → panzerlehrbrigade 9 ). Corresponding to the naming of the brigades, some of these companies were referred to as airborne reconnaissance, tank reconnaissance training or mountain reconnaissance companies, but they belonged to the tank reconnaissance force. Units of the tank reconnaissance units that were directly subordinate to the corps were usually given the numbers 100, 200 and 300 for subordination to the I. , II. And III. Corps .
Correspondingly, the remote scouts temporarily belonging to the tank reconnaissance force were assigned the designations Fernspähkompanie 100, Fernspählehrkompanie 200 and Fernspähkompanie 300 according to their subordination to one of the three corps, see also the list of the German armed forces' long-distance reconnaissance units .
