List of world champions in rowing / nation ranking
World champion in rowing |
These lists are part of the list of world champions in rowing . They contain the national rankings and the medal table of the rowing world championships since the first edition as well as various breakdowns. The lists are from 1962 to 2016, i.e. they include all 46 world rowing championships.
general remarks
According to the regulations of the World Rowing Federation (FISA), one team per competition and member federation is allowed to start at the World Rowing Championships. This overview is therefore - similar to the World Rowing Association itself, whose overview is unfortunately incorrect in some places - based on the reporting associations. A summation of different nations therefore does not take place if these competing nations have been separated from one another or have been merged from different previously competing nations. In particular, the following special situations arise:
- The already separated associations of West and East Germany were only allowed to register one team at the then seven competitions at the 1962 World Championships by FISA. Even if all six medal wins went to the account of West German teams and the only East German starter went empty-handed, the medals in this medal table are assigned to the all-German team (" Germany "). From 1966 to 1990, two German associations competed separately, since 1991 the team of the united Germany. The situation in 1990 in particular has to be considered separately. Although the world championships were held after reunification, both associations were allowed to register their own team. The medals won by the then former GDR are included in this list of the GDR, as the World Rowing Association also does. The West German medals from 1990 go to West Germany.
- The Soviet Union entered from 1962 to 1991. From 1992 the following countries started separately, of which Belarus , Ukraine , Russia , Lithuania and Estonia have so far won medals (as of 2016).
- Yugoslavia entered the old form (SFR) until 1991 . After the disintegration, beginning in 1993, the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (from 2003 onwards as Serbia and Montenegro ) and the other successor states competed separately; Croatia and Slovenia have so far won medals in addition to the FR of Yugoslavia (as of 2016). After the independence of Montenegro , Serbia has stood alone since 2006. In 1992 no team from the area of the former SFR Yugoslavia competed, and at this point it is unclear how a start would have been reported.
- The Czechoslovakia approached to 1992, since 1993, the Czech Republic and Slovakia separately at the start.
- The British formally compete in the World Rowing Federation as Great Britain consisting of Wales , Scotland and England , with the British Rowing Federation taking care of the entry. The the United Kingdom also associated Ulsterman usually have in addition the Irish citizenship and can mitrudern either in the British team or the Irish team.
All tables are subdivided into the following columns:
- Place: order of countries. This is determined by the number of gold medals. If the number is the same, the silver medals are compared, then the bronze medals.
- Country: Name of the country. In individual cases, the respective predecessor states are also included.
- Gold: Number of gold medals won
- Silver: Number of silver medals won
- Bronze: Number of bronze medals won
- Total: Number of all medals won
As with the World Rowing Association, the sorting takes place in descending order according to the number of gold medals, in the case of a tie also in descending order by the number of silver medals and in the event of a further tie also in descending order according to the number of bronze medals. The period in which a nation was able to take part in the World Championships is given in brackets. At this point, however, no complete data is known about actual participations. If no time period is given, the nation was eligible to participate in each event.
Male and female classes
- Scope: all world championship competitions in women's and men's classes; no para classes .
- A total of 844 competitions were held at 49 World Championships between 1962 and 2019, which corresponds to the total number of gold medals. The number of silver medals has increased by two (846), as they were awarded twice due to the fact that they were equal in time ( 1986 in LW2x and 1993 in LM4x ). The number of bronze medals is therefore reduced by two (841). The omission of a bronze medal by only two registered teams ( 2005 in LM8 + ) will be compensated by a bronze medal ( 2007 in LW2x ) that was awarded twice due to equality . The total number of all medals awarded is accordingly 2531.
- According to current knowledge, reclassifications resulting from disqualifications are already included.
- The demo competitions in four women's lightweight boat classes during the 1984 World Championships are not counted.

At the rowing world championships, a distinction is made between so-called Olympic boat classes , in which rowing is also carried out at the Olympic Summer Games , and so-called non-Olympic boat classes , which are only included in the program at rowing world championships. Since the former are typically more staffed and viewed more highly, a distinction in the medal table makes perfect sense. The financial support for the athletes in the Olympic boat classes is often significantly higher than in the non-Olympic classes.
As a result of the changes in the Olympic program, the status as an Olympic boat class has also been subject to changes over time, which are documented in the following table. In this list, those boat classes are rated as Olympic boat classes that were held at the Summer Olympic Games that followed the World Championships. Since the activities in international rowing are strongly oriented towards the Summer Olympics, this practice best follows the actual circumstances.
It should be noted that the Olympic boat classes in the year of the Summer Olympic Games are not held at the World Rowing Championships. Non-Olympic boat classes have existed since 1974.

Para oars
- Status: 2002–2016. No paraclasses were rowed out before 2002 .
- A total of 48 competitions were announced at 12 world championships with paraclasses from 2002 to 2016. Since in one case there was no competition because only one team had registered ( 2015 in TAMix2x ), the total number of medals is 47. The bronze medal was also not awarded twice due to a lack of entries ( 2003 in TAMix2x and 2009 in LTAIDMix4 + ), which is why only 45 bronze medals can be counted. The total number of medals in this medal table is 139.
