List of European blast furnace plants
The number of blast furnace sites in Europe, excluding Russia and Ukraine, has decreased significantly since the 1950s. While 136 blast furnaces were still in operation in Germany in 1960, there were only 16 in 2005. The reasons for this change can be found in capacity adjustments and in the rationalization of the blast furnace process.
The need for the preservation and museumization of blast furnace plants that arose in the 1980s shows that their cultural value and their significance as landmarks are increasingly accepted by society.
