The list of Irish loughs refers to the island of Ireland .

The word lough (pronunciation [ lɒx ] or [ lɒk ]) comes from Irish (there: loch [ lɔx ]) and means lake . It corresponds with it the usual designation in Scotland loch .

There are many lakes in Ireland. Most of them are called lough . The list includes those loughs that are of geographical, geological or historical importance.
