During the scholastic period it was customary to give famous scholars of theology and philosophy epithets that express their characteristic strength or dignity. This tradition, which emerged in the Middle Ages, is attested to the early modern period . The following list shows the most important epithets with the year of death, as well as the scholars' religious affiliation in many cases.
