- Ernst , Elector of Saxony, died on August 26, 1486 at Colditz Castle after falling from his horse while riding in the Schweinitz woods.
- Sophie von Brandenburg (1568–1622) , Electress of Saxony, had her widow's residence here from 1602–1622
