Mayan Codices
Page 9 of the Dresden Codex
- July 12th : As Bishop of Yucatán, Diego de Landa has Mayan writings, images and symbols burned at a car dairy. He wants to convert Indians to the Christian faith. Only four Maya codices remain. These are the Madrid Codex (also Codex Tro-Cortesianus , 112 pages), the Dresden Codex (also Codex Dresdensis, 74 pages), the Paris Codex (also Codex Peresianus, 22 pages) and the Grolier Codex (11 pages), the only preserved as a fragment and is possibly a forgery.
Poetry
- The narrative poem The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet ( The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet ) by Arthur Brooke appears. A good thirty years later it would inspire William Shakespeare to write his famous tragedy Romeo and Juliet .

- January 18 : The tragedy Gorboduc , written jointly by Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset , in the previous year , is premiered in London in the presence of Queen Elizabeth I of England.

- Volumes V and VI of the Magdeburg Centuries , a church history from the perspective of the Reformation , appear.
- Petrus Ramus publishes the French grammar Gramere .
