prose
The epic Os Lusíadas ( The Lusiads ) by Luís de Camões appears for the first time. The work, which is dedicated to King Sebastian of Portugal , depicts in verse (based on Homer's Odyssey ) the idealized history of Portugal from its beginnings to the time of Camões, especially the Portuguese discoveries and conquests in Asia. Because of its quality, but also because of its great patriotism, it is considered the greatest testimony of Portuguese literature and makes Camões to this day the Portuguese national poet . The Lusiads are the inhabitants of Lusitania , the Roman name for Portugal, which is said to go back to Lusus, a companion of Bacchus . The work consists of 10 chants, each with a different number of stanzas . The 1,102 stanzas contain a total of 8,816 verses .
The early New High German poet Johann Fischart publishes the works Eulenspiegel rhyming with the publishing house of his brother-in-law Bernhard Jobin in Strasbourg , an adaptation of the Eulenspiegel theme in verse, Artliche Praise der Lauten , Aller Praxis Grandmother and A preparation in the "Amadis" . In most of his works he makes use of the art of pun and Knittel verse .
drama
- Jean de La Taille publishes the tragedy Saül le furieux .
Scientific works
From 1572 Georg Braun published the city view work Civitates Orbis Terrarum . The work, comprising six volumes up to 1618, presumably inspired by Sebastian Munster's Cosmographia , in format and layout clearly based on the Theatrum orbis terrarum by Abraham Ortelius published in 1570 , sets completely new standards and acts as a model and as a treasure trove for templates for well over a hundred years . The city views are given on double pages on the inside, while the respective historical and topographical descriptions are printed on the outside. Frans Hogenberg is essentially the creator of the panels in the first volume. Other people involved include the Dutch miniature painter Georg Hoefnagel and the painter and cartographer Daniel Freese as a supplier of templates based on orders from Heinrich Rantzau . Works by Jacob van Deventer , Sebastian Münster and Johannes Stumpf are also used.
- L'Algebra , a summary of the mathematical knowledge of his time and his own findings, is published by Rafael Bombelli .
- Henricus Stephanus (II.) Publishes the first comprehensive dictionary of the Greek language, the Thesaurus linguae Graecae .
- Jean de La Taille describes in his work L'art de la tragédie with reference to Aristotle and Scaliger the basics of the structure of the tragedy .
