Louis von Marées (born April 23, 1787 in Dessau , † September 16, 1864 in Frankfurt (Oder) ) was a Prussian major general .

Louis was a son of the ducal Anhalt-Dessau cabinet councilor Otto Ludwig von Marees (* October 30, 1748, † April 6, 1833) and his wife Johanna Dorothea Wilhelmine, née Werner. His brother Heinrich († August 30, 1813) acquired the order Pour le Mérite near Graudenz and later fell in the battle near Nollendorf .

Military career

On April 16, 1804 Marées resigned as Corporal Corporal in the Infantry Regiment "Winning" the Prussian army . In the Fourth Coalition War he was wounded in the Battle of Jena . He came to Erfurt and after the surrender of the fortress was taken to Nancy as a prisoner of war . He did not return home from captivity until 1809.

Thereupon Marées was hired on July 28, 1809 as Portepeefähnrich in the regiment of the guards and in mid-August 1809 advanced to secondary lieutenant . On September 12, 1812, he was transferred to the East Prussian Jäger Battalion . With the association he took part in the campaign against Russia in 1812 . By the end of July 1815, Marées rose to captain and company commander in the Kaiser Alexander Grenadier Regiment .
