Love Yourself 轉 'Tear' is the third studio album by the South Korean boy group BTS , which was released on May 18, 2018 via Big Hit Entertainment . The album contains eleven songs with Fake Love as the only single. Four different physical versions (Y, O, U, R) have been released. Tear is the follow-up to their EP Love Yourself 承 'Her' , which was released in September 2017.

Background and advertising

Love Yourself 轉 'Tear' was announced on April 14, 2018 via the short film Euphoria: Theme of Love Yourself 起 Wonder . Tear is the direct successor to the EP Love Yourself 承 'Her' . The song Euphoria , sung by band member Jungkook and written by Leader RM , should serve as a bridge between the two albums. On May 6th, group member V's comeback trailer Singularity came out. The song was recognized by Billboard for its mysterious sound and jazz elements. On May 8th the concept photos of the "O" and "R" versions and two days later the "Y" and "U" versions were posted on Twitter. On May 13th, BigHit released the track listing.

Two hours before the album was released, there was a live stream from Los Angeles on the V App in which the members celebrated their new album.

The group had their debut performance of Fake Love at the Billboard Music Awards 2018, where they also won the award for "Top Social Artist".

On May 24th, Mnet organized a comeback show that was streamed live worldwide.

The BTS World Tour: Love Yourself started in August 2018 .

In just six days, the album received over 1.4 million pre- orders , breaking Love Yourself 承 'Her’s record for the most pre-orders in the Korean music industry, making the group the first Korean act with two albums to reach over a million pre-orders. In the 20th calendar week of 2018, the album was number one on the South Korean album charts. The single Fake Love was sixth.

It is the first album by a Korean band to top the Billboard album charts. It is also the first non-English-language album in 12 years at number one on the US album charts.

In December 2018, Tear was nominated for a Grammy in the category "Best Recording Package".

Tear received mostly positive feedback from music critics. Allmusic's Neil Z. Yeung gave the album four stars out of five. Sheldon Pearce wrote for Pitchfork that the album addresses the themes of love and loss and that rap is in the foreground.
