The area was detached from the Dibang Valley district on December 16, 2011. Since then, Lower Dibang Valley has been an independent district.

Lower Dibang Valley is bordered by Dibang Valley to the north, Tibet to the east, Lohit to the southeast, and the state of Assam to the southwest .
