Luis Lintner (born May 25, 1940 in Aldein ; † May 16, 2002 in Salvador da Bahia ) was a South Tyrolean missionary .

Life

Lintner was born on May 25, 1940 on a mountain farm in Aldein, South Tyrol. After attending primary school in Aldein, he attended secondary school and the humanistic high school-lyceum Johanneum (Dorf Tirol) near Merano . From 1960 to 1963 he studied theology in Trento and from 1964 to 1966 in the seminary in Bressanone . On June 29, 1966, Bishop Joseph Gargitter ordained him a priest. After his consecration he worked as a cooperator in the South Tyrolean parishes of Nals , Tiers , Terlan and Naturns until 1971 . From 1971 to 1973 he completed further studies in catechetics and homiletics in Munich. From 1973 to 1979 he worked as a youth pastor and in adult education in the diocesan educational center Lichtenburg in Nals.

In 1980 Lintner went to Bahia in Brazil as a Fidei donum priest . From 1980 to 1991 he worked as the first pastor in Tabocas do Brejo Velho, a parish in the Diocese of Barreiras , which was founded only a year earlier and whose first bishop was the native Austrian Richard Weberberger . In addition to building up parish work, he devoted himself particularly to defending small farmers from large landowners and land robbers. He then worked from 1991 to 2002 in Cajazeiras, a favela in Salvador da Bahia . As pastor of the then newly founded parish of Ss Virgem Maria de Nazaré, he campaigned for the children and women of the slums as well as for homeless street children and founded the social center Casa do Sol in 1997 . Luis Lintner was a project partner of Adveniat , missio Austria, the Three Kings Action of the Catholic youth group and the Florentine organization for long-distance adoption Agata Smeralda .

During his home visits, Lintner repeatedly pointed out the global connections between injustice and exploitation in the countries of the south and called for radical changes. His efforts also contributed to the fact that the law on development cooperation was passed in South Tyrol in the late summer of 1991.

On May 16, 2002, Lintner was shot dead in Cajazeiras. The background to the murder was never cleared up. His body was transferred to South Tyrol and buried in the Aldein cemetery.

Commemoration

In Brazil, two institutions continue Luis Lintner's social engagement: in Tabocas the Escola Família Agrícola agricultural school, founded in 2007 and named after Luis Lintner, and in Cajazeiras, Salvador da Bahia, the Casa do Sol social center . It was opened by Lintner in 1997 and has been named after his violent death. The house of solidarity “Luis Lintner” in Brixen is named after him and houses eco-social organizations and people in difficult circumstances.

The diocese of Bolzano-Brixen and the diocesan mission office take care of the memory of Luis Lintner. Both Bishop Karl Golser and Bishop Ivo Muser visited Lintner's workplaces in Brazil. On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of his death, a group of young people from the slums of Salvador da Bahia visited Lintner's home in May 2017.
