history

Mügeln on a map from the 19th century

The old Sorbian original form on which the place name is based was probably * Mogiľno or * Mogylina and is derived from * mogyła, a Slavic word for "earth, burial mound". The place name means "settlement near a (burial) hill" and possibly refers to a prehistoric burial ground discovered in Mügeln or to a burial ground of the Slavs from the 11th century. The place name was first mentioned in 1347/49 as Mugelin. In the following centuries a variety of spellings were in use, including "Mogeln", "Moegelin", "Muegeln", "Moglen" and "Muglenn". The place is mentioned in 1548 as "Mügeln". To distinguish it from the Saxon town of Mügeln , the place was called in 1875 “Mügeln b. Pirna ”.

Mügeln emerged as a lane village and was equipped with a 249 hectare block and strip corridor. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was owned by the von Mogelin family named after the place. The drug mill in Mügeln was first mentioned in 1473. In 1548 Mügeln was about half an official village of the Pirna Office . The other part of the village was paid interest to Melchior von Korbitz as the owner of the Gommern manor and the city council of Dresden. In the 18th century there was also a manor in Mügeln itself. In the 1730s it was subordinate to the chief miner Carl Christian von Tettau . In the 19th century it belonged to the Carl Wilhelm von Oppels family, among others . The administration of the place was in 1404 the care Dohna, from the 16th century to the office Pirna and partly to the religious office of Dresden or its successors. From 1856 the Pirna court office was responsible.

On the basis of the rural community code of 1838 , Mügeln gained independence as a rural community . In 1875 this was part of the Pirna Authority . The place was parish for centuries after Dohna in the Marienkirche , since 1899 there is a separate parish in Mügeln. At that time, in the years before the First World War , the place grew very quickly into an industrial community. The Goethe School on Ernst-Thälmann-Strasse was inaugurated as early as 1897.
In 1912 the branch of the machine factory Johann Martin Lehmann Dresden was founded in Mügeln , mainly machines for the production of cocoa, chocolate and sugar products were built. The company had been the world market leader in this industry since 1870 and held over 50 patents. While the main Dresden factory was completely destroyed in 1945, it was possible to continue production in Mügeln with the help of machines recovered from the rubble. Under the name VEB Schokoladen-, Seifen- und Farbenmaschinenwerke Heidenau , the company belonged to the VVB NAGEMA combine until 1989 and was then privatized as Heidenauer Maschinenfabrik GmbH.

On April 1, 1920, Mügeln merged with Gommern and Heidenau to form the new municipality of Heidenau. The Mügeln Town Hall, inaugurated on September 16, 1911, has since served as a domicile for the city council and the Heidenau city administration. The Christ Church was built around 1930 as an emergency church. In 1984 the Mügeln prefabricated residential area with 1,368 new apartments was built around Käthe-Kollwitz-Straße.
