geography

Bird's eye view of Wölkau

Wölkau is located in the far west of the city of Heidenau. It is located on the plateau between Müglitz in the east and Lockwitzbach in the west south of the Elbe valley . To the east of Wölkau, a small side valley of the Rietzschkebach digs into the terrain, to the west of the village is the headwaters of the Maltengraben . The very small Wölkauer Flur with an area of 39 hectares is used for agriculture and for the fruit growing around Borthen . Wölkau borders almost all around the cities of Dohna (in the west, south and east) and Dresden (in the north). Only in the extreme northeast of the corridor, in the area of the Lugberg, is there an approximately 100-meter-wide connection to the rest of the Heidenau city area. The only district of Heidenau adjacent to Wölkau is Gommern . Neighboring districts of Dresden are Kleinluga in the north and Lockwitz in the northwest. Borthen borders in the southwest, Bosewitz in the south and Meuscha in the east , all of which belong to Dohna.

The district of Wölkau consists exclusively of the old village center, a loose round shape . Because of the small size of the village, the address of all houses is simply Wölkau, supplemented by the respective house number. In the northwest, the border road affects the local situation . To the west of Wölkau, it branches out into two streets that connect the district with Borthen and Bosewitz. At the northern end of the Wölkauer Flur, the Grenzstraße meets the Dresden-Teplitzer Poststraße , which in this area is called Lockwitzer Straße. The road connection leads to the rest of the Heidenau city area via it and Lugturmstrasse. The federal autobahn 17 runs almost 500 meters south of Wölkau, but runs over Bosewitzer Flur. The next connection point is Heidenau and is located 1.5 kilometers west of Wölkau. There is no direct public transport connection in Wölkau.

history

Wölkau on a map from the 19th century

The old Sorbian original form on which the place name is based should be * Viľkov- or * Veľkov-. It goes back to * Viľk or * Veľk, a first name of a Slavic locator corresponding to the German wolf . It means "settlement of a Viľk or Veľk". The assignment of the place name "Welkuz" mentioned in 1350 is uncertain. The fact that Wölkau is mentioned in 1445 as "Welckow" is documented. In the middle of the 16th century, documents name the "desert village of Welckwa" and "a desolate margk, heyst der Welck, has 3 hooves ". Accordingly, the place was a desert back then . Around 1600 there were "Vfm Welgk 8 Heuser". Other spellings were "Wölcke" and "Welckau". In 1875, in addition to the current form, “Wölka” was also in use.

Wölkau was surrounded by a block and striped corridor. The place was and is parish for centuries after Dohna in the Marienkirche . The owners of the manor Borthen exercised the manorial rule in Wölkau. The administration of the place was initially incumbent on the Dohna, since the 16th century the Pirna Office and then in 1856 the Pirna Court Office. On the basis of the rural community order of 1838 , Wölkau gained independence as a rural community. In 1875 this was part of the Pirna Authority . On July 1, 1950, Wölkau was incorporated into Heidenau and from 1952 it belonged to the Pirna district , from which, along with other districts, the Saxon Switzerland district emerged in 1994 and the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district in 2008.
