The Müllerhütte ( Italian Rifugio Cima Libera ) is an alpine club hut in the South Tyrolean part of the Stubai Alps near the border with Austria. It is located at an altitude of 3145 m slm above the Übeltalferner and is one of five huts in the Eastern Alps that can only be reached via glaciers . Goods can only be transported to the hut on foot or by helicopter.
history
In 1891, Carl Müller from Teplitz built the first hut just above the current location, which he financed entirely himself. This building was designed in a completely new way and consisted of a frame made of wooden beams, which was boarded and covered with impregnated cloth. There was no attic. The interior was also innovatively designed with special foldable bunk beds that also served as bench seats. As early as 1892 it had to be expanded due to the large number of visitors. In 1894 the Teplitz section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club took over the Müllerhütte. In July 1909, the section opened the Archduke Karl Franz Josef refuge at what is now the hut location. This hut was already being managed and offered space for 50 people, although the old hut was also used. In 1917 the name was changed to Kaiser-Karl-Schutzhaus . In 1923 the hut was expropriated and handed over to the Bozen section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). The old hut fell into disrepair.
Together with 24 other shelters expropriated by the state, the Müllerhütte became the property of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol in 1999; At the end of 2010, the license for their management by the CAI expired. Since 2015, the state of South Tyrol has been supported in the management of the hut (assignment to tenants, supervision of management, renovation measures) by a joint commission, in which the AVS and CAI are represented in addition to the public sector .
