The house at Münchner Straße 28 was built in 1847 as a school building and is now a residential building in Munich . The building is registered as an architectural monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

location

The building is located in the Thalkirchen district of Munich at the foot of the slope edge of the Isar high bank at the confluence of Münchner Straße and Fraunbergstraße about 150 meters west of the church of St. Maria Thalkirchen . Since the Fraunbergstrasse turns south at this point and merges into the Schmiedberg, which leads up to the Isar high bank, the house is in the middle of the line of sight of the Fraunbergstrasse and thus forms its optical closure to the west. Behind the house, Hoeckhstrasse, which is closed to through traffic, leads north on the Isar high bank up to Plinganser Strasse and Boschetsrieder Strasse .

History of the schools in Thalkirchen

A first classroom in the village of Thalkirchen was located in a small annex to the Church of St. Maria, which consisted of a single classroom, “next to it a box-like room with a bed as a bedchamber for the teacher”. In addition to teaching “reading, writing, arithmetic, a little singing and above all religion”, the teacher also had to take on other tasks related to the church. This school was initially the only educational institution for all children from Thalkirchen, but also from Solln , Forstenried and Pullach . There was no provision for remuneration for the teacher, he lived on alms, some of which were given in kind, which is why school operations were repeatedly interrupted for years when there was no teacher. There has been evidence of school fees since 1792 , which many parents were unable to pay, which is why the compulsory schooling that had existed since 1803 was not fully complied with. The number of children rose with the population growth from around 30 to around 70 in 1819. With the formal formation of the Thalkirchen parish according to the parish edict of 1818 , the teacher got an official job and a salary in 1819.

As early as 1813, the conditions of the school were declared "pitiful" in a letter from the Munich Regional Court to the General Commissioner for the Isar District . But it was not until 1847 that the Thalkirchen community was able to build its own schoolhouse on Münchner Strasse below the edge of the slope. The extension of the church was used as a morgue .

The new rooms were better, but the school performance remained unsatisfactory. A visitation report from 1875 showed deficiencies in all subjects. The Thalkirchen students were weak in arithmetic, writing and reading, their geographical knowledge and reading maps inadequate. The teacher Victor Gulielmo was recommended to improve his own knowledge and to be more diligent in teaching. As a result, the school fee exemption was introduced in 1876 in order to enable the children of poorer parents to attend school regularly. A renovation of the school building is proven for 1889.

The number of children increased massively with the expansion of Thalkirchen. Therefore the older ones had to go to Sendling , but that wasn't enough at the end of the 19th century either. Because of the increasing number of children, a new school building was built in 1891 at Münchner Strasse 34 on the part of Münchner Strasse south of Fraunbergstrasse (the current Miesingstrasse) and a second teaching position was set up. For 1898, 313 school children and 3 teachers were registered in Thalkirchen, a room on Fraunbergplatz was rented as the third classroom. The equipment was also poor, and many families could not afford school books. Starting this year, the community provided 50 marks a year to keep a basic stock of school books. A fourth class was added in 1898.

In preparation for the incorporation of Thalkirchens into Munich on January 1, 1900, the community had set the condition that their school should be preserved. Therefore, in the course of 1899, fifth, sixth and seventh teaching positions were approved. To this end, a barrack with additional classrooms was built opposite the new schoolhouse in 1900 and 1902, which were in operation until 1906. In 1904, school operations were relocated, initially for the older children, and from 1906 for everyone to the Boschetsrieder Straße elementary school, which was newly built after the incorporation, above the slope. The neighboring communities and districts got their own schools around the turn of the century. From 1933 until it was destroyed in the Second World War in 1944, the schoolhouse from 1891 was used again for this purpose. The Boschetsrieder Straße elementary school is today the only elementary school in the Thalkirchen area (as of 2020).

The original schoolhouse from 1847 was converted into a rectory for the parish of St. Maria Thalkirchen by 1903 . The continuous classroom on the upper floor was divided into individual rooms and the stairs were moved to the current location. In addition, a small extension with a toilet was built. After the construction of the new parsonage on Fraunbergplatz right next to the church, the old school and later parsonage became the nursing home for the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent von Paul and sacristan's apartment. The last repair took place in 1990.

Building from 1847

Münchner Straße 28, entrance side

The building from 1847 is two-story, has a floor area of about 9 × 12 meters and has a hipped roof , which gives it a Biedermeier appearance. The entrance, to which two steps lead up, is on the north side, set back from the street, on an approximately 12 × 12 meter paved courtyard , which extends to the neighboring house at Münchner Strasse 26, whose entrance is also on the courtyard. The regular windows have flat arches and are closed with smooth shutters .

The former Thalkirchner schoolhouse is part of the under ensemble protection standing Ensemble Thalkirchen , confining it to the west.
