On April 13, 2019, a countdown to April 26, midnight appeared on Swift's website, which sparked speculation about the release of new music. On April 25, various news outlets reported that a mural of a butterfly in Nashville , Tennessee , painted by street artist Kelsey Montague, was linked to the upcoming release. Hundreds of people gathered at the mural when the words "ME!" Were added by Montague.

The song was at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2019 with the award for the Best Video award.
