The club was founded on June 8, 1864 and had its roots primarily in the gymnastics movement. In 1880 a so-called pupil youth department was set up, followed a year later by an old age group. In 1914 a gymnastics division was established and the club flag was restored. The sports field was built in 1924 and was initially named Jahnplatz four years later . The club emblem with the city arms was approved by the municipal authorities in 1929 . On September 5, 1939, the National Socialists ordered a merger of the MTV Soltau with the SV Soltau founded in 1912 to form the MTSV Soltau . In 1945 it became the New Gymnastics and Games Association (NTSV) , from which SV Soltau broke away in 1947 and which finally became MTV again on May 3, 1948. The club and youth home was built in 1958 directly on the sports complex.
The football department was only founded in 1939 due to the aforementioned merger with the SVS and remained in place when the MTV was founded. From 1959 to 1962, the MTV team played in the Heide relay of the third-rate Lower Saxony amateur league . The MTV Juniors reached the finals for the Lower Saxony Championship in 1963/64 . After a good three decades in the lower leagues, the MTV won the district upper league championship in 1994 against city rivals SVS and rose to the fifth-class Verbandsliga Ost , the highest league in the Lower Saxony Football Association . However, the direct relegation followed. Also in the seasons 1996/97 and 1998/99 the club had one-year guest appearances in the (now renamed) fifth-rate Lower Saxony league . From 1999, however , the MTVers no longer got beyond the sixth class national league . In the meantime, she even crashed into the district league. In 2013/14, the team played again in the national league. Since March 30, 1986, the stadium newspaper "MTV Stadion Kicker" has been published for every home game of the 1st men's team. The football department has been an official partner of Werder Bremen since 2003 , the cooperation includes, for example, games against Werder youth teams or visits to Bundesliga games.
In 2010 the men's handball team was promoted to the Lower Saxony Oberliga , the fourth highest division. With the entry into the final of the HVN-Pokal 2010, participation in the DHB-Pokal in the 2010/11 season was secured. In the first round, coach Bernd Schors' team met SV Oebisfelde 1895, the champions of the Oberliga Sachsen-Anhalt, on August 21, 2010, but lost the game 23:28.
On March 31, 2014, the association had to file for bankruptcy at the local court in Celle . The liabilities of 350,000 euros exceeded the value of the association, it was overindebted. In particular, losses in the operation of the clubhouse had led to the financial difficulties in recent years. The bankruptcy proceedings were opened on June 30, 2014 . The sports business continued to run normally. In 2014, despite financial difficulties, the club celebrated its 150th anniversary, a highlight of the celebrations was a friendly match against Bundesliga club Hannover 96 in the local Hindenburg Stadium on October 8th.
In 2018 the Soltauer relegated to the district league again due to the worse goal difference compared to MTV Borstel .
