Malton is a country town in the English county of North Yorkshire and the administrative seat of the District Ryedale . Malton has about 4000 inhabitants.

geography

Malton is located in the east of the county in the Howardian Hills and on the northwest bank of the Derwent , about 30 km northeast of York , 35 km southwest of Scarborough , 60 km northwest of Kingston upon Hull and 70 km southeast of Middlesbrough .

history

City center

A settlement already existed in the area of ​​Malta in ancient times, which flourished especially in the second half of the first century. Documentation about this can be viewed in the local history museum, which is housed in the town hall. In the course of the decline of the Imperium Romanum , the Roman occupation gradually emigrated in the years after 367 AD, and from 405 the settlement was completely deserted and neglected.

From 1640 to 1868 Malton was represented by two MPs in the British House of Commons . Among them was the politician and philosopher Edmund Burke . From 1868 to 1885 Malton was represented by a MP.

Culture and sights

The Flamingo Land Resort , a large animal and amusement park, is located near Malton . With 1.8 million visitors a year, it is the twelfth most popular theme park in Europe.

Malton is on the A64 ( Leeds - Scarborough) and the A169 which runs north via Pickering to Whitby . Since 1979, a new route on the A64 has been running north-west around the city with two separate lanes in order to reduce through-traffic in the city. The B1248 heads towards Driffield and Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire .

Malton Railway Station is a station on the York – Scarborough line operated by First TransPennine Express and is located on the opposite bank of the Derwent in the urban area of Norton-on-Derwent . There is an hourly rail connection to Scarborough (northeast) and to York, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool (southwest). There are plans to reactivate the route from Malton to Pickering, which would provide a direct rail link to Whitby.

The national bus company Yorkshire Coastliner is based in Malton . It offers bus connections on a route from Leeds via York and Malton to Pickering and Whitby as well as to Scarborough and Bridlington . There are also several local bus routes to, among others, Castle Howard and surrounding villages.

There are two secondary schools in Malton : The Malton School, founded in 1547, and Norton College . There are also three primary schools in the city.
