Marathon City is located in north-central Wisconsin on the Big Rib River , a tributary of the Wisconsin River that flows into the Mississippi .

In 1857, Germans previously resident in Pennsylvania settled on the site of the present-day location. A Catholic church was built in 1863, a flour mill in 1870, a brewery in 1881 and a sawmill in 1882.

In 1884, at the instigation of its residents, the place was incorporated as the Village of Marathon City . In 1891 Marathon City was connected to the railway network. The timber company Menzner Lumber & Supply Company , still active today as Menzner Hardwoods , was founded in 1894 and had its offices in the former house built in 1875 by the mill owner Henry Fricke .

According to the 2010 census , Marathon City had 1,524 people in 638 households. The population density was 243.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Statistically, 2.39 people lived in each of the 638 households.
