Marcel Appiah (born March 26, 1988 in Schwelm ) is a German - Ghanaian football player who is used as a defender .

Career

Appiah started playing football at the age of three and came back to TSG Sprockhövel in 2007 through the clubs TuS Ennepetal , FC Schalke 04 , TSG Sprockhövel , VfL Bochum and SG Wattenscheid 09 , where he scored 19 goals in the Oberliga Westfalen scored.

In 2008 he moved to Arminia Bielefeld's second team , which was also active in the newly introduced NRW League . With the second team he reached promotion to the regional league in the 2009/10 season. In addition, Appiah was twice in the professional Arminia team in the 2nd Bundesliga , where he made his second division debut on April 19, 2010 during the home game against 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he was part of the starting lineup. For the 2010/11 season he received the status of a contract amateur with Arminia Bielefeld in order to recommend himself to the second division team after the first missions in the previous season. From November 2010 he was then regularly used as a starting eleven player in the second division.

After Arminia was relegated to the 3rd division after the 2010/11 season , Appiah received a professional contract with the DSC for the 2011/12 season . After he was one of the regular players in the first ten games under the new coach Markus von Ahlen , he was initially only used sporadically after his dismissal. On matchday 28, he played for the first time in 18 games from the start and immediately scored his only goal of the season. In the following games Appiah kept his regular place and ended the season with the Arminia in the lower middle of the table. In his second third division season, Appiah established himself as a versatile player in the team. At the end of the season he celebrated promotion to the 2nd Bundesliga with Arminia, which automatically extended his contract.

After the direct relegation Appiah moved to NEC Nijmegen in the Dutch second division . As a regular player in defense, he was promoted to the Eredivisie with the club in 2015 . There he was also regularly used in the following season with an injury break, but in frequently changing positions.

In August 2016 he signed a two-year contract with third division club VfL Osnabrück . In the following 1.5 seasons he was a regular player in defense there, but lost his regular place in the second half of the 2017/18 season. His contract, which expired in summer 2018, was not renewed.

After six months without a club, Appiah moved to the USA , where he was signed to the newly founded second division Birmingham Legion FC from Birmingham (Alabama) in January 2019 . Due to a three-month injury break, he was only used in three games, whereupon his contract was terminated in summer 2019.

Appiah then returned to Germany and in July 2019 joined VfR Aalen , who had been relegated to the Regionalliga Südwest .
