Pilgrimage chapel Maria Hilf in Andermatt

The pilgrimage chapel Maria Hilf was built in 1735/1736 in Andermatt in the canton of Uri .

history

The tradition of pilgrimages to Mary arose in Andermatt at the beginning of the 18th century . To this end, a Maria-Hilf picture was initially set up on the edge of the Gurschenwald to protect against the avalanches . A small chapel was built in 1723/1724. The growing number of pilgrims attending the miraculous image of Maria Hilf led to the construction of today's chapel in 1735/1736, which was consecrated in 1744 by the Chur bishop Joseph Benedikt von Rost . The builder was probably Johann Sebastian Schmid from Andermatt. The model was probably the St. Karl chapel in Hospental , which his father Bartholomäus had built in 1719. In the years 1908 and 1989/1990 the community had extensive renovations carried out on the church.

inner space

The chapel stands in an exposed position on the slope below the Gurschen directly above the Andermatt town center. Blind arcades on Tuscan pilasters on high plinths structure the facade. The gray gable roof has an open roof turret with an onion dome at the eastern end . The window and door frames are made from local serpentinite . On the west side there is a vestibule with a curved canopy and a groin vault supported by Tuscan columns.

The church has a single nave with two bays and a retracted choir with a polygonal end. The interior of the nave is spanned by a barrel vault with belt arches and stitch caps . The interior walls are structured by pilasters with profiled, surrounding cornices . Blind arcades are located between the pillars. The choir is designed similar to the nave. But it has a hemisphere with stitch caps at the top. Stucco ornaments designed as leaf volutes , flower garlands and bandwork decorate the ceiling and wall surfaces.

The cover paintings are works from 1908 and are by Josef Heimgartner. In drilled cartouches , the central picture in the western yoke shows the presentation of Mary in the temple and in the second yoke of the Visitation of Mary . Representations of Saints John of Damascus and Bonaventure are on the right lateral stitch caps, of Saints Veronica Giuliani and Rosa von Lima on the left stitch caps. Cartouches on the wall of the choir arch represent Mary and the angel of the Annunciation, Gabriel . In the main painting of the choir there is an Immaculate , depicted protectively over the Urserental and Andermatt. The arched-cut caps show Saint Cyril of Jerusalem , Pope Pius IX. , Verena and Kunigunde . The glass windows in the nave are painted with depictions of the four evangelists and in the choir with other scenes of the life of Mary.

Furnishing

Pulpit and left side altar

The high altar integrated into the back wall of the choir is made of stucco marble . In a simple cafeteria there is a free-standing tabernacle in gold and turquoise tones and above it, under a canopy, a painting showing a Madonna and Child based on the Innsbruck image of Mariahilf by Lucas Cranach . The altarpiece, an oval medallion with a depiction of the Madonna from 1908, is framed by a column on the side and by a halo and the dove of the Holy Spirit on top .

The two side altars are designed similar to the high altar. The left side altar shows the death of Joseph in the altar sheet and St. John Nepomuk in the excerpt . The right side altar has a depiction of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian in the altar sheet and above that in the excerpt one of St. Francis .

Carvings, inlays and gold ornaments decorate the square wooden pulpit on the north side of the nave. The basket has sloping corners with protruding pillars and acanthus leaves as decoration. A trumpet angel is located on the sound cover with its multi-profiled cornice. The west wall of the church is decorated with a baroque depiction of the miraculous image and painting of saints carried by angels .
