Verena
Verena ( [veˈʀeːnaː] or [feˈreːna] ) is a female given name .
Origin and meaning
Verena probably comes from the late Latin verenus “credible”, derived from verus “true, genuine”. Often the name is also translated as “the shy ” or “the godly ” and thus derived from the Latin vereri “shy, fear, adore”, and sometimes an origin from Celtic Belena “the white” or “the wise” is considered.
Verena or dialectal Vre, Vrene, Vreni, Vreneli is one of the most traditional baptismal names in Switzerland , and St. Verena von Zurzach is venerated in many places. Verena Day (September 1st) plays a central role as a lottery day . The personal name occurs in place names such as Vrenelisgärtli , Vereinapass or in the folk song Vreneli ab em Guggisberg . The six-part Swiss cultural radio drama series Jimmy Flitz e Reis dür d Schwyz by Roland Zoss is entirely dedicated to the search for the mythical female figure Verena. Shortly before the Second World War, the popular name " Goldvreneli " became popular for a gold coin with a woman's head .
