Marie Spieler (born January 14, 1845 in Breslau ; † December 28, 1913 there ) was a German painter.

Life

Player grew up with a younger sister in Breslau on Werder, where her father was a civil servant. After finishing school, she first passed the teacher examination at the Protestant seminar in Münsterberg , taught privately for a while and then turned to painting. She received the basics from Albrecht Bräuer (1830–1897), teacher at the Royal Art and Trade School. In 1872 she continued her studies with Antonie Volkmar in Berlin and from 1873 to 1874 was a private student of Eduard von Gebhardt in Düsseldorf . The thematic and stylistic conception of the Düsseldorf School of Painting is particularly clear in her painting “Die Kartenlegerin” . In 1874 she went to Munich , in 1880 to Paris , where she copied in the Louvre . Then she settled as a freelance painter in Wroclaw. Numerous studies were carried out in Gdansk and Königsberg , on the Hel peninsula , in Lübeck , Quedlinburg , Hildesheim , Rothenburg ob der Tauber , Münster and Nuremberg . She also traveled in Europe, including England (1893, 1907, 1909) and Scotland , Belgium and the Netherlands , the Engadine and repeatedly to Tyrol , Dalmatia ( Herzegovina and Bosnia , 1912) and often to Italy (1883, 1889, 1899, 1902, 1906, 1911), most recently in autumn 1913, from where she returned sick. Her “Travel Pictures from Herzegovina and Bosnia” and “Bruges” appeared in the summer of 1913. Some of her oil paintings were reproduced by the Hanfstängl publishing house in Munich and appeared as wood engraving illustrations in popular magazines of the time. In her studio in Wroclaw she taught private students and occasionally opened it to the interested public. From March 2 to 10, 1914, the studio could be visited for the last time on the occasion of an estate exhibition.

In 1902 she was with Gertrud Staats (chairwoman), the portrait painter Anna von Gritschker-Kunzendorf (secretary), Dora Seemann (1858–1923), Elise Nees von Eßenbeck (1842–1921) and others co-founders of the “Association of Silesian Women Artists for the Protection of Class Interests and for the purpose of organizing joint exhibitions ”. She took over the office of cashier. She was a real native member of the Silesian Society for Patriotic Culture .
