The restaurant with garden was built on the remainder of the former Glocksee - Ravelin in the moat of the city fortifications of Hanover . Before that, the artillery school had its practice site here before its teachers such as Carl Friedrich Gauß moved to the Höhere Gewerbeschule , which was newly founded in 1831 (forerunner of today's Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover ).

The Marieninsel restoration , which was named in honor of the Hanoverian Crown Princess Marie , was built on the former defensive structure . A bathhouse was set up in the park , a bowling alley and an open-air theater with three tiers, in which opera performances were presented from 1847 onwards.

After the Battle of Langensalza in the German War and the end of the Kingdom of Hanover , the last remains of the former artillery barracks around Marieninsel were demolished from 1866 onwards. But only after the incorporation of the Glocksee in 1869 disappeared the last remains of the former city moat "around" Hanover and the ravelin of the former artillery yard: In 1870 the city of Hanover acquired the Marieninsel from the tax authorities , the moat in the west of the city as the last part of the former city fortifications Hanover was filled in, and so from 1870 onwards the Humboldtstrasse and Goethestrasse streets in the direction of Goetheplatz, which were laid out at the same time, were built .

The restoration finally took place in 1874.
