Marina Kaljurand (born Marina Rajevskaja ; born September 6, 1962 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician and diplomat . She was Foreign Minister of the Republic of Estonia from July 16, 2015 to September 12, 2016.

Life

Marina Kaljurand's father is Latvian , her mother is of Russian descent.

She graduated from high school in 1981 at what is now Tallinna Inglise Kolledž in Tallinn. She then studied law at the university in Tartu in southern Estonia until 1986 .

Diplomat

After Estonian regained independence, she joined the newly established Estonian diplomatic service in 1991. Initially, she worked in the press and public relations department. From 1992 to 1996 she was head of the division for international agreements in the legal department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also completed training and further education at the Estonian Diplomatic School, Tufts University , the University of Lapland , the University of Pittsburgh and the Civil Service College in the United Kingdom .

From 1996 to 1999 Marina Kaljurand worked at the Estonian Embassy in Helsinki . From 1999 to 2001 she was the head of the legal department of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 2001 to 2005 the undersecretary ( asekantsler ) for legal and consular matters . From 2004 to 2006 she was also accredited as the Estonian Ambassador to Israel .

From 2005 to 2008 Kaljurand was the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia in Moscow . From 2008 to 2011 she was Undersecretary for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tallinn. From 2011 to 2014 she was Estonian Ambassador to Washington, DC (with double accreditation for Canada and Mexico ). She then returned to Tallinn and was Undersecretary responsible for legal and consular issues.

Foreign Minister

Following the resignation of Foreign Minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus , Marina Kaljurand was Estonian Foreign Minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas from July 16, 2015 . At that time it was non-party and was nominated by the liberal reform party ( Reformierakond ).

On September 9, 2016, Kaljurand announced her resignation as foreign minister and her candidacy in the presidential election . At the election meeting on September 24, 2016, however, it failed in the first round. Her successor in the office of foreign minister was the liberal politician Jürgen Ligi .

MPs

In the 2019 parliamentary elections , she ran as a candidate for the Social Democratic Party of Estonia (SDE) in the constituency of Harju (excluding Tallinn) and Rapla. There she managed to win a seat in the Estonian parliament ( Riigikogu ) with 5504 votes . In the following European elections in 2019 , she ran as the top candidate of the SDE and was able to achieve the best result of all applicants. It was able to achieve so many votes that the SDE was able to send two MPs to Brussels.

Private

Since 1975 Kaljurand was also active as a top athlete. In badminton she won several national titles in Estonia.

Marina Kaljurand is married to the former badminton player Kalle Kaljurand (* 1960). The couple has the daughter Kaisa and the son Kristjan . Both children are also active as badminton players.
