Matruh ( Arabic محافظة مطروح Muhāfazat Matrūh , DMG Muḥāfaẓat Maṭrūḥ , also Matrouh ) is a governorate in Egypt with 425,624 inhabitants and is located in the northern part of the Libyan desert .

It borders in the north on the Mediterranean Sea , in the east on the governorates of Alexandria , al-Buhaira and al-Jiza , in the south on the governorate al-Wadi al-Jadid and in the west on Libya ( Munizip al-Butnan ). The administrative center is Marsa Matruh . The communities are divided into a total of 54 villages at the lowest level.

Administrative division

Matruh is divided into eight districts ( marākiz , singular markaz ), all of which except Siwa have a part of the coast. The districts from west to east, as well as the largest district with 94,263 km² in the south of Siwa:
