Matt Greene began his career as a hockey player in the United States Hockey League , in which he was active for one season each from 2000 to 2002 for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program and the Green Bay Gamblers. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2002 in the second round as a total of 44 players by the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League . Initially, however, the defender played for the University of North Dakota in the National Collegiate Athletic Association for three years .
For the 2005/06 season , the defender finally moved to the professional field and celebrated his debut for Edmonton in the NHL during the season - in addition to appearances for the Iowa Stars in the American Hockey League . After he had established himself in the regular squad of the Oilers for the following season, he fell out in the 2007/08 season due to an ankle injury over long periods.
On June 29, 2008, after three years with the Oilers, the American was handed over to the Los Angeles Kings together with Jarret Stoll in exchange for Ľubomír Višňovský . For this he was in the 2008/09 season in all 82 games of the regular season on the ice and reached 14 points scorer. He was also appointed assistant captain straight away . With Greene as a defensively reliable player, the Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014 . After nine years, the Kings paid him the remaining two years of his contract in June 2017 (buy-out) , so that the defender was subsequently considered a free agent . In August 2017, at the age of 34, Greene announced his retirement from active sports and moved to the Kings scouting division .
International
For the USA , Greene took part in the U18 World Junior Championship in 2001 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 2003 . He was also in the US squad at the 2007 , 2008 and 2010 World Championships . He could not win a medal in any of the five World Cup participations.
