Thylander played at Höllvikens GIF when he was young, before moving to Malmö FF's youth department in 1991 . There he made his debut under coach Rolf Zetterlund at the beginning of the 1995 season in the Allsvenskan ; in the 3-0 away win at Degerfors IF , he also scored his first two league goals. At the side of Jonnie Fedel , Niclas Nylén , Jonas Wirmola , Jens Fjellström and Jörgen Pettersson , he established himself in the team for long stretches of the season, varying the line-up between defensive line and midfield and was also due to a dismissal that made him cost a regular place, ultimately for 15 season assignments. In the following season he was a regular player, with the club he finished second behind series champion IFK Göteborg . Under the new coach Frans Thijssen he reached third place in the 1997 season , at the same time he played his way into the Swedish national team. In August, he made his debut as a substitute in the national jersey on the occasion of a 1-0 win over Lithuania with a goal from Martin Dahlin . However, this was his only international appearance, and the club did not succeed as a result: in the following seasons the team was in a relegation battle. Under the coaching duo Roland Andersson and Thomas Sjöberg , he was only second choice in the 1999 season , ultimately the club was relegated to the second division at the end of the season.

Thylander moved to AIK after relegation within the Allsvenskan . Here he did not prevail, however, in his first year he only made six stakes. Although he played in 21 of the 26 league games in the following season and stood with the team in the final of the Swedish National Cup , in which he was substituted on when the score was 1-1 draw shortly before the end of regular time and with the team on penalties at IF Elfsborg failed, but he decided to leave the club at the end of the year. Together with Sharbel Touma , he moved from AIK to Halmstads BK . Due to an injury, he was only able to play a limited role under coach Jonas Thern , only after the summer break in 2002 did he make his debut for the club in the Allsvenskan and at the beginning of the 2003 season he was also out for long stretches.

In early 2004 Thylander joined the Danish second division side Silkeborg IF , but did not get beyond the status of a supplementary player despite the promotion and was therefore without a club from the summer. In the following winter break, however, the club took him under contract again, until the summer of 2005 he played 14 games in the Super League . Then he returned to his Swedish hometown Trelleborg and ran from then on for Trelleborgs FF in the second-rate Superettan . As a regular player, he rose with the club at the end of the second division season 2006 in the Allsvenskan. Here he remained a regular before moving into the second tier in the 2009 season . In the summer, he terminated his contract with the club. He then let his active career end with the amateur club Höörs IS .

Thylander, who studied mathematics at Lund University in the 1990s , has been active as a players' agent since the beginning of 2011 .
