Mavea (also: Ile Mafea , Ile Mafia , Ile Mavia ) is an inhabited island in the New Hebrides in the Pacific . It is located off the east coast of Espiritu Santo and belongs to the province of Sanma in the island state of Vanuatu . The island reaches about 63  m at the highest point .

geography

The island is about 2.5 km off the east coast of Espiritu Santo. It is roughly oval and the longitudinal axis runs from south to northwest. Together with the headland Le Hénaff Point in the north, another tiny island and the island of Aese (Haiite), it forms the enclosure of the bays of Palikulo Bay and Turtle Bay . A settlement on the island is called Matanpousa . Towards the larger island of Espiritu Santo, the coast is quite rugged with other small islands and numerous blue holes .

population

In 2015 there were 232 inhabitants in 47 households. About 30 inhabitants still speak the endangered language Mavea . Another 30 native speakers have left the island and live scattered in Vanuatu, mainly on Espiritu Santo ( Deproma and Matevulu ), on Aore Island and in Port Vila , the capital of Vanuatu. All Mavea speakers are bilingual with Bislama .
