Max Franz Guido Freiherr von Thielmann (born April 4, 1846 in Berlin ; † May 2, 1929 there ) was a German diplomat , politician and state secretary in the Reich Treasury of the German Empire .

Diplomatic career

Thielmann studied in Berlin and Heidelberg , where he became a member of the Corps Saxo-Borussia in 1864 . He was a descendant of the General of the Wars of Liberation , Johann von Thielmann , his parents were his son Franz von Thielmann (1799–1868) and his second wife Mathilde von Friebe (1812–1874).

He went into the diplomatic service . In the following years he worked at the German embassies in Petersburg , Copenhagen , Bern , Washington, DC , Brussels , Paris and Constantinople .

In 1886 he was first consul general in Sofia . He was then the Prussian envoy in Darmstadt , Hamburg and Munich between 1888 and 1894 . In 1895 he was appointed ambassador to Washington DC. Theodor von Holleben became his successor there in 1897 .

State Secretary in the Reich Treasury

On July 1, 1897, he was appointed to succeed Arthur von Posadowsky-Wehner as State Secretary in the Reich Treasury in the cabinet of Reich Chancellor Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst . He also retained the office in the government of Bernhard von Bülow ( Cabinet Bülow ) in office from October 17, 1900 . On August 23, 1903, he resigned from the office of State Secretary. Successor in this office was Hermann von Stengel .

Baron von Thielmann was also appointed legal knight of the Order of St. John . Since 1909 he was a member of the Prussian manor house .

As a diplomat, he traveled extensively in the Caucasus , Persia and America and was the author of travelogues.

Baron Max von Thielmann married in Dresden on June 19, 1886 with Cäcilie Countess von Roß (born 1854), lady of honor of the Royal Bavarian Order of Theresa.
