Carl Heinrich Otto Joseph Anton Ritter and Edler Mayer von Mayerfels (born November 18, 1825 in Munich ; † February 8, 1883 ibid) was a German heraldist, art historian and researcher. At the beginning of 1864, the royal chamberlain Carl Ritter und Edler von Mayer was granted permission to settle the von Mayerfels title of nobility . Since then, he and his descendants have been allowed to use the name Ritter und Edle Mayer von Mayerfels .

Life

Carl Mayer von Mayerfels was the son of the banker Joseph von Mayer (1779–1861) and Anna von Reichenbach , the daughter of Georg Friedrich von Reichenbach . Mayer von Mayerfels grew up in Munich, where he studied history after graduating from high school. As a student he was in 1844 Renonce and 1847 rezipiertes member of the Corps Suevia Munich . He also received the ribbon of the Grün-Helvetia Zurich (1880) and the Corps Suevia Freiburg (1882). As a lieutenant colonel in the Bavarian Landwehr , he was inspector of the Upper Bavarian 1st Landwehr district. In his main heraldic work in 1857 he wrote himself Carl “Ritter von Mayer” (like his father), but in the text already indicated the direct descent from the noble family of the “Mayer von Mayerfels”, as he later preferred to call himself.

Carl Mayer von Mayerfels was shaped by the need to add as many imaginative additions to his name as possible. For this purpose, he acquired a number of old aristocratic residences, after which he then named himself (for example as "Herr zu Prößels auf Völz", etc.). These included Prösels at Völz, karneid castle if Kardaun, Burgstein in Renon , Hocheppan Castle , the Old Castle on Lake Constance, Schwaneck on the Isar and Niederpöcking on Lake Starnberg. He combined this with an uncommon desire to build, which was reflected in the acquisitions of Schwaneck (1863) and Meersburg (1878) in particular after his father's death. His collections of medieval weapons and armor required a freight train with 30 wagons for the last move from Schwaneck to Meersburg, all of which were fully loaded. In Meersburg he represented the Grand Duchy of Baden on the board of the Association for the History of Lake Constance and its surroundings .

He was connected through work with the heraldist Otto Titan von Hefner . He found it difficult to publish his works, which were then realized by Hefner. Often this Mayer tried to spend for his work, which led to violent arguments.

For his work, especially in the field of heraldry , he was awarded a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Freiburg . Orders from European rulers also honored the researcher. The city of Munich named a street after him. With the death of his last daughter Ida von Miller († 1939), the Meersburg, which he had acquired in 1877 from the daughters of Joseph von Laßberg and Jenny von Droste zu Hülshoff , was opened to the public as a museum by his granddaughter.
