Megan Elizabeth Laura Diana Follows (born March 14, 1968 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian - American actress . From 1991 to 1995 she performed under the name Megan Porter Follows .

Life

Megan Follows was born to a Canadian family of actors. Her parents Ted Follows (* 1926) and Dawn Greenhalgh (* around 1934) are both actors, as is her sister Samantha Follows (* 1965, married to actor Sean O'Bryan ). Her sister Edwina Follows (* 1961) is an actress, screenwriter and television producer, her brother Laurence Follows (* 1963) is an actor and theater producer.

Megan Follows was already on the stage with her parents and siblings as a toddler. As a nine-year-old she first appeared in a commercial in front of the camera, soon followed by appearances in cinema and television films. Her first major lead role she played with eleven years (1979) as Jenny in the 26-part Canadian television series Matt and Jenny , in 1981 and in Germany in the first program of the ARD entitled Matt and Jenny - Adventures in maple country aired.

After her parents divorced, she moved from Toronto to Los Angeles in 1979 and also acquired US citizenship. She was also able to continue her career as a young television and film actress in the USA.

Megan Follows became internationally known as the actress in the title role Anne Shirley in the 1985 four-part Canadian television series Anne on Green Gables (original title: Anne of Green Gables ). This miniseries was broadcast in German synchronization in 1986 by ZDF and ORF . In 1987, the five-part sequel Anne in Kingsport followed (original title: Anne of Green Gables: The Sequel ), which was broadcast in German by ZDF in 1988 and ORF in 1989. For both series, Follows received a Gemini Award in 1986 and 1988 for best female leading role in a Canadian miniseries. A third season filmed in Canada under the title Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story (2000), which shows the protagonist Anne Shirley as an adult in her 30s, was not broadcast in the German-speaking area, but it was released on DVD with a German translation .

After her great success in Anne on Green Gables , Megan Follows appeared in numerous other feature and television films, but above all in television series. From 1988 onwards, she regularly performed theater on various stages in Canada and the USA, and in the 1990s she specialized in Shakespeare roles. Since 2005 she has been a permanent member of the Soulpepper Theater Company in Toronto, which was co-founded in 1998 by her partner, the Canadian actor Stuart Hughes (* 1959).

In 1991 Megan Follows married the Canadian professional photographer Christopher Porter, whom she met in 1990 while filming the film Deep Sleep , where he was working as a head illuminator . Daughter Lyla Ann was born in 1992 and son Russell was born in 1995. The marriage was divorced in 1995. With her two children and with Stuart Hughes, with whom she has been together since 1996, Megan Follows commutes between her two residences in Toronto and Los Angeles.
