Melchior Barthel (* 10. December 1625 in Dresden , † 12. November 1672 ) was a German sculptor of the Baroque .

Life

Melchior Barthel was born on December 10, 1625 in Dresden as the son of the Dresden sculptor Hieronimus Barthel . At the age of 15 he began an apprenticeship with his father, who however died shortly afterwards. After his death he looked around for a new teacher, whom he found in Johann Böhme in Schneeberg . In 1645 he began his wanderings , which led him to Regensburg to the sculptor Heinrich Wilhelm and later to Passau to the sculptor Johann Seitz , where he successfully completed his apprenticeship. The journey continued through Austria to Ulm . There he learned to work with ivory from the then famous David Helscher, also Heschler . Three years later he went to Rome , where he worked independently. After two years he left the city and turned to Venice . There he created in the period from 1665 to 1669 together with the architect Baldassare Longhena the tomb of Doge Giovanni Pesaro in the Frari Church , the four Altantes and the two interwoven allegories represented. This work is considered to be his main artistic work. Barthel lived and worked in Venice for 17 years. In 1670 he returned to Dresden and in the same year was appointed court sculptor at the Saxon court by Elector Johann Georg II . appointed. He brought two sculpture students, Paul Premsler and Elias Ränz, with him to Dresden. Another of his students was the sculptor Mathias Wenzel Jäckel , who later settled in Prague . Ränz became a sought-after sculptor in Bayreuth . Barthel's health deteriorated considerably and he died in Dresden on November 12, 1672.
