The M 113 is an eight-cylinder - V engine ( gasoline engine ) from Mercedes-Benz , which in September 1997 in the E-Class (210 series) was introduced, and later in the S-Class 220 series and other models. It replaced the M 119 built from 1989 . In September 2005 the successor M 273 was used. However, the M 113 was still installed in some models after the generation change (2005/06).

technical description

The M 113 was offered both with mechanical supercharging (compressor) and without. Technically it is closely related to the V6 M 112 . Both engines have the same angle of 90 ° between the cylinder banks and the same cylinder spacing of 106 mm. This means that they can be manufactured efficiently on the same production facilities and use many of the same components. Both have an engine block made of light alloy with cast-in cylinder liners made of Silitec ( Al - Si - alloy ), and a light alloy cylinder head having an overhead camshaft per cylinder bank. The camshafts and, on the M 112, also the balancer shaft , are driven by a double roller chain.

The engines M 112 and M 113 have two inlet valves and one outlet valve per cylinder , which are operated via light metal roller rocker arms with hydraulic valve clearance compensation. The individual exhaust valve results in a smaller surface area of the exhaust duct and, as a result, in particular when the engine is cold, less heat dissipation from the exhaust gas to the cylinder head. As a result, the catalytic converter reaches its operating temperature more quickly. The thin-walled sheet metal exhaust manifold , which absorbs little heat, also contributes to this.

The engine has two spark plugs for each combustion chamber to the right and left of the exhaust valve. The arrangement of valves and candles is symmetrical. The double ignition works with delayed activation of the two candles. This results in fast and even combustion, greater security against combustion misfires and higher tolerance against mixture lean and exhaust gas recirculation . As the heat load on the piston increases due to the double ignition , it is cooled by oil spray nozzles which spray the engine oil from below against the piston crown. The candles in each combustion chamber are also controlled from one work cycle to the next in an alternating sequence. This results in a more even and lower heat load on the piston and even burning of both candles.

The 5 l variant of the M 113 is optionally available with cylinder deactivation (ZAS). At low loads and up to a speed of 3500 rpm, the engine only runs with four cylinders. Two cylinders in each bank are shut down so that the remaining cylinders fire at regular intervals (180 ° crank angle). The valves are also shut down. The rocker arms are divided into two parts and the parts can be decoupled from one another by a hydraulically operated piston. The ZAS improves the efficiency of the engine through smaller throttle losses and higher effective compression, since the cylinders are filled better. According to the manufacturer, the gasoline consumption of the S 500 (220 series) is reduced by 0.9 l / 100 km by the ZAS.

The Mercedes-Benz M 155 was developed for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren on the basis of the E 55 ML variant .
