Merith Niehuss

Merith Niehuss (born February 13, 1954 in Bielefeld ) is a German historian and sociologist . Since 2005 she has been President of the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich .

Live and act

Niehuss was born in Bielefeld as the first of two children to a journalist and a housewife. She spent the first few years in Westphalia before the family moved to Munich . There she attended the Luisengymnasium from 1964 .

After graduating from high school , she studied history (MA), English and sociology (diploma) in Regensburg and Munich . In 1982, she was at Gerhard A. Ritter , University of Munich with a thesis workers in war and inflation: social stratification and condition of the workers in Augsburg and Linz 1910-1925 to Dr. phil. PhD . 1993 habilitation them there. Her habilitation thesis was on family, women and society. Studies on the structural history of the family in West Germany and was a project of the Volkswagen Foundation . In 1994 Niehuss received a Heisenberg scholarship and held the chair for German and European history of the 19th and 20th centuries at the University of the Bundeswehr in Munich. Two years later she accepted the call to take over the chair as professor. Niehuss’s research focuses on social history and gender research. She is the author, co-author and editor of several books.

From 1999 to 2003 Niehuss was vice president of the university. In 2005 she was re-elected as the successor to Hans Georg Lößl as President of the University in 2010. Niehuss' term of office ended in 2017, but was reappointed for a third term.

She was also a member of the University Council of the University of Salzburg from 2003 to 2013 ; since 2010 at the University of Stuttgart . In 2005 she became chairwoman of the scientific advisory board of the NS Documentation Center in Munich . She is also a member of the following boards of trustees: Deutsches Museum in Munich (2008), Academy for Political Education in Tutzing (2011) and Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (2012).

Niehuss holds the professorship for modern history at the Faculty for Political and Social Sciences at the University of the Federal Armed Forces in Munich. This has been represented by Sylvia Schraut since the beginning of her presidency .
