Bishop Michael Haas

Michael Haas (born April 8, 1810 in Pinkafeld , Austrian Empire ; † March 27, 1866 in Pest , Kingdom of Hungary ) was bishop of the Roman Catholic Church of Satu Mare ( German Sathmar ) from 1858 to 1866 .

Life

Michael Haas studied in Pinkafeld , Steinamanger , Pécs (Fünfkirchen) and in Vienna . He obtained his doctorate in philosophy in Vienna. He was ordained a priest on August 6, 1834 . He then worked as a pastor in various places in Hungary. From 1837 he was professor of history at the Lyceum in Pécs, from 1846 to 1853 parish priest in Pécs. From 1853 to 1858 Haas worked as a school councilor in the Pest district.

Emperor Franz Josef I finally appointed Michael Haas bishop of the diocese of Sathmar on September 27, 1858 . It was consecrated on February 13, 1859 in the basilica of Esztergom by Cardinal Ján Kritel Scitovszky the Archbishop of Gran .

Bishop Haas opposed the Hungarian nationalist tendencies despite violent protests from local nationalists. He campaigned for the advanced training of the German-speaking Swabians who have lived in the area for centuries . Among other things, one owes him the continued existence of the German elementary schools.

Michael Haas wrote his first detailed treatise on the Hianzen and thus made an important contribution to the study of the Hianzen dialect, which is still spoken in large parts of Burgenland in the 21st century , as well as to Hungarian ethnology. A handwritten work by Haas on Hanian customs, songs and customs has been lost.

When he received a letter without the desired folkloric additions, he wrote under it:

"Nothing about the Hienzen"
