Michael Seitz (born March 29, 1959 in Pensacola , Florida ) is a former American wrestler who became known under the ring name Michael Hayes as the leader of The Fabulous Freebirds . As a ring announcer he worked under the name Dok Hendrix in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). He is one of the main writers on WWE's SmackDown show today .

Active wrestling career

Early stage

Hayes was trained by Afa Anoa'i and began wrestling in a local wrestling promotion in Tennessee . Hayes called himself Michael "PS" Hayes (the "PS" stands for "Purely Sexy"). In 1979 he founded the tag team The Fabulous Freebirds with Terry “Bam Bam” Gordy , which was joined by Buddy “Jack” Roberts . The three held many doctorate titles. So Hayes began to do a kind of moonwalk in the style of Michael Jackson .

The Freebirds remained active in the Georgia Championship Wrestling NWA graduation from 1980 to 1982 , where they held several national tag team titles.

World Class Championship Wrestling

In 1982, the three Freebirds moved to World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW), where they had their most famous feuds with the Von Erich family . Christmas 1982 Hayes was the guest referee in a match for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship between Ric Flair and Kerry Von Erich in a steel cage . Hayes knocked down Flair, but Von Erich refused to pin Flair. Terry Gordy then hit Von Erich's door on the head and Flair was able to defend his title. This led The Fabulous Freebirds and the Von Erichs into a storyline that spanned the remainder of the WCCW time and was only ended in 1993 in a tribute match for the late Kerry Von Erich.

Hayes has always been portrayed as the leader of the group. He also sang the song Badstreet USA (1983), one of the first performing music to come from the rock genre . In the music video, all three Freebirds appeared, as well as Jimmy Garvin, who was loosely part of the group. The musical basis was Lynyrd Skynyrd's song Free Bird .

In 1984 the Freebirds switched to WWF for a short time, but left the doctorate again when management wanted to dissolve them and use them as individual wrestlers. You appeared a year later for a short time in the AWA and had appearances as opponents of the Road Warriors . At the SuperClash 1985 they won the " AWA World Tag Team Championship ", but the title was stripped from them. Then the Freebirds made sure that Jimmy Garvin and Steve Regal took the title from the Road Warriors. They then left the league and returned to Texas . In 1986, the Freebirds are in the opening sequence of the film Highlander - There Can Only Be One To Be Seen.

UWF

The Freebirds appeared in the Universal Wrestling Federation between 1986 and 1987 with "Sunshine" as their manager and had feuds with The Fantastics ( Bobby Fulton and Tommy Rogers ), as well as "Dr. Death “Steve Williams .

1986 Hayes' team partner Terry Gordy became the first holder of the UWF heavyweight title. The storyline with several title changes and fights against One Man Gang and General Skandor Akbars Devestation Inc. eventually led to the dissolution of the tag team. Hayes remained active as Babyface and competed at Starcade in 1987 with Jimmy Garvin and Sting against a team consisting of Eddie Gilbert , Rick Steiner and Larry Zbyszko . He was also allowed to challenge NWA World Champion Ric Flair.

Return to World Class Championship Wrestling

In 1987, Hayes returned to WCCW, where his former partners, with Iceman Parsons as the third man, appeared as freebirds and continued their feud with the Von-Erichs. Hayes began to act together with the Von Erichs against his former partners. At the major event in the 1988 World Class Parade of Champions , Hayes lost a “Hair vs. Hair ”match against his former partner Terry Gordy. But he refused to cut his hair. The two were now used as baby faces.

National Wrestling Alliance

In 1989, Hayes left the WCCW and fought for Jim Crockett's Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling , where he continued to be used as Babyface and was allowed to compete against Butch Reed, Ric Flair , Barry and Kendall Windham . Hayes won the US Champion Belt by Lex Luger , it lost a short time later. In the promotion, the Freebirds reunited and became the new NWA World Tag Team Champions .

World Championship Wrestling

In 1991 Jim Crockett Promotions renamed himself World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and The Freebirds competed against The Young Pistols (Steve Armstrong and Tracy Smothers). With Badstreet , a new freebird joined the team. They won the US Tag Team Titles and the Six-Man Title, among others. For a short time, Diamond Dallas Page acted as their manager. After Badstreet quit in 1991, the Freebirds lost their importance and disbanded in 1992.

Hayes was used as a heel and managed Arn Anderson and Bobby Eaton . In 1993 he did babyface gymnastics again and had a feud with Paul Orndorff . He formed a tag team with Johnny B. Badd . In the same year he also started working as a commentator. In 1994 he left WCW and appeared again as The Freebirds with Garvin and Gordy in the Global Wrestling Federation .

After an active wrestling career

World Wrestling Federation / Entertainment

In 1995 Hayes had to give up his active wrestling career because of an injury. From then on, he appeared as host Dok Hendrix alongside Todd Pettengill in the WWF Action Zone . Often credited with inventing Steve Austin's Stone Cold Stunners , he was actually invented by WWE Road Agent / Director of Talent Relations, Johnny Ace. But Hayes taught Austin how to put it on and do it.

In 1999 he returned for a short time as a wrestler for Power Pro Wrestling, where he won the title there. He then returned to WWF as manager of The Hardy Boyz ( Matt and Jeff Hardy ). He later became a road agent and commentator on Sunday Night Heat from 2000 to 2001 . In 2001 he joined WrestleMania X-Seven in a Battle Royal .

In 2002 he was on a flight to England, where drunk wrestlers had fun with him and cut his hair and stuck it on the wall. The flight made headlines through the wrestlers' rude jokes and led to the sacking of Curt Hennig .

From 2002 to 2006, Hayes appeared occasionally on the storylines of WWE shows. In October 2006, he became the chief scribe for SmackDown .

On April 23, 2008, Hayes was suspended for 60 days for making fun of an accident involving wrestler Mark Henry and making racist comments.

He served as the manager of Tyson Kidd for the May 12, 2011 edition of WWE Superstars . A week later, Hayes ended the collaboration after a match.

On April 2, 2016, Hayes was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame along with his former stable The Fabolous Freebirds .

music

In 1987, when the "Bad Street" song became popular again, Hayes recorded the album Off The Streets . He also played a few concerts with his backing band "Badstreet Band". In July 1998 the Pro Wrestling Illustrated mentioned the band positively. In the following years he also appeared again and again with his band as part of appearances at the WCCW, including at the Dallas Sportatorium of the WCCW. Concerts were also used to advance the storylines.
