Michael Helwig (born April 24, 1663 in Flemmingen near Altenburg ; † May 11, 1738 in Helmstedt ) was a German sculptor and wood carver.

Life

He was born as the son of the lease owner Wolfgang Helwig . In 1704 he moved to Helmstedt in the house Kybitzstraße 25 ( ), which belonged to Johann Eisenhart , professor of law at the University of Helmstedt . Helwig paid the citizens' money on October 16, 1704 . On the same day he won the brewer's guild . On November 4, 1704, he married the widow Dorothea Margr in St. Stephen's Church . Holte , nee Glunke .

In 1707 he acquired the house in Kybitzstrasse from Catharina Maria Eisenhart , the widow of the late Professor Johann Eisenhart . In 1726 he sold the house to Catharina Tieck , but continued to live there.

After his wife died childless on April 1, 1731 at the age of 67, he remarried the widow Anna Dorothea Wendemuth , née Carwehl , in the Stephanikirche on February 19, 1732 . This marriage also remained childless. Michael Helwig died six years later in the house at Kybitzstraße 25 and was buried in the churchyard of the Sankt Walpurgis Church.

Works

Helwig created various wood carvings for churches in the East Westphalian region. There were also stone tombs and epitaphs . His works were created in the Baroque style . He carried out the work himself together with his assistants in his workshop, which was located in the courtyard of his house. Once completed, the pieces were then taken to their destination. His last known work dates from 1726, when he seems to have retired.

Invoices have been received for at least two of his works. He was paid 110 thalers for the carvings on a prieche in Langenweddingen in 1708. For his last work in 1726, an altar wall for Klein Dahlum, he received 102 thalers and 24 groschen.
