Michael James Lewis (born December 24, 1990 in Laguna Beach , California ) is an American racing driver . He competed in the European Formula 3 championship in 2012 and 2013 .

Career

Lewis began his motorsport career in 2002 in Midget Cars . He appeared in various Midget series until 2005. In 2005 he switched to karting , where he remained active until 2010. Since 2009, however, his main focus has been on formula racing . He made his debut in the American Formula BMW in 2009 . Starting for EuroInternational , he achieved three podium finishes and finished fourth in the championship at the end of the season, while his teammates Gabby Chaves and Giancarlo Vilarinho finished first and second. After the closure of the American Formula BMW, Lewis switched to the European Formula BMW in 2010 . While his teammates Carlos Sainz junior and Daniil Kwjat achieved podium finishes, Lewis finished the season with fifth place as the best result in 14th place overall. He also made guest appearances in the Pacific Formula BMW in 2009 and 2010.

In 2011 Lewis switched to the Prema Powerteam in the Italian Formula 3 championship . With three wins, he was the driver who won the most races this season. Nevertheless, Lewis lost to Sergio Campana with 136 to 149 points at the end of the season . Within the team, Lewis prevailed over Raffaele Marciello by 13 points and also won the rookie standings. As a reward for his achievements in Italian Formula 3, Lewis was given the opportunity to complete a Formula 1 test for Ferrari in November . In 2012 , Lewis stayed with Prema Powerteam and switched to the Formula 3 Euro Series . He was also eligible for the European Formula 3 championship . He won a race in the Formula 3 Euro Series and finished the season in eighth place. In the European Formula 3 he was ninth in the drivers' championship. While Daniel Juncadella , one of his three teammates, won the title in both series, Lewis was the worst Prema driver on points in both championships.

In 2013 , Lewis was initially without a cockpit. At the second race weekend of the European Formula 3 championship, he replaced Pascal Wehrlein , who had switched to the DTM , at Mücke Motorsport . While his team-mate Felix Rosenqvist finished second overall with 457 points, Lewis achieved 19th place overall with 23 points.
