Michael Stöcker (born July 25, 1937 in Steinwiesen in Upper Franconia , Bavaria ; † April 9, 2013 in Rosenheim ) was a German local politician and Lord Mayor of Rosenheim.

Life

After the Abitur at grammar school in Ingolstadt Michael Stocker went to community service of his military service as a regular soldier three years for armed forces and was a naval officer . He completed his law studies at the LMU Munich , financed by a highly gifted scholarship , from which he also obtained his doctorate , and his preparatory service with honors . After a short period of service at a federal authority, he began his professional career at the end of 1968 as a public prosecutor and judge in Rosenheim.

In 1972 he was elected for the CSU city ​​council in Rosenheim and immediately second mayor. In 1977 he won the mayor's election and took office on September 22, 1977 as the successor to Mayor Albert Steinbeißer .

Even as second mayor, his main goals were to improve the quality of the city, preserve the monuments, as well as education, school and sports policy. The establishment of the pedestrian zone he had applied for in 1972 was only successful after several attempts in 1984. The same applies to the town hall, which opened in 1982 and was expanded as an event and congress center in the mid-1990s.

The incorporation of the previously independent communities of Aising , Pang and Westerndorf St. Peter , which took place in 1978 as part of the Bavarian regional reform, was one of his first major tasks. In the course of his tenure he improved the relationship with the district and the surrounding communities decisively, in the 1990s u. a. thanks to his initiative, the Rosenheim SUR urban area was founded. A town partnership was concluded with the Italian city of Lazise on Lake Garda .

His term of office as Lord Mayor ended after 25 years on April 30, 2002. On April 9, 2013 Michael Stöcker died unexpectedly at the age of 75.

Awards

In 1994 Stöcker received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany , and in 1999 the Federal Cross of Merit , First Class. In 2001, he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit . Furthermore, at the end of his last term of office, he received the honorary title of former mayor and was made an honorary citizen of the city of Rosenheim.
