Michael Simon White (born January 16, 1936 in Glasgow , Scotland , † March 7, 2016 in Ojai , California ) was a British film and theater producer .

Life

White was sent to a private school in Switzerland by his parents when he was seven . He later attended high school in Glasgow and studied at the Sorbonne in Paris . After initially working on Wall Street , he became the assistant to producer Peter Daubeny in 1956 . He began his career as a producer with Jack Gelber's The Connection in the early 1960s . Its production Oh! Calcutta! ran in London's West End for ten years from 1970 without interruption; on Broadway for 13 years from 1976. In 1973 he brought with himThe Rocky Horror Show hit a cult classic for the first time. Shortly afterwards he also got into the film business, initially through film adaptations of his theater productions. In addition to The Rocky Horror Picture Show , White also produced Richard O'Brien's unofficial sequel, Shock Treatment . He also produced the Monty Python comedy film The Knights of the Coconut , the comedy Nuns on the Run with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane, and A Pope to Kiss , also with Coltrane.

In the mid-1990s, his success on stage and in film productions waned, and he ultimately had to file for bankruptcy in 2005. He also suffered the first of several strokes shortly before . When he received the special prize for his life's work at the Laurence Olivier Awards in 2014 , he could only receive it in a wheelchair.

White was twice divorced and had four children.
