Míriam Colón
Míriam Colón Valle (born August 20, 1936 in Ponce , Puerto Rico , † March 3, 2017 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress . She was the founder and director of the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater in New York City.
Life
Míriam Colón made her debut as an actress in 1953 in the film Los Peloteros, alongside Ramón Rivero , a film that was produced in Puerto Rico and in which she played a character named Lolita . In the 1950s she came to New York City to study acting at Actors Studios. She later moved to Los Angeles , where she got minor roles in various television shows and films. In 1955 Colón began as a series actress, which led her to the considerable sum of more than 250 guest appearances in various television series , such as Bonanza , Smoking Colts or NYPD . Her roles in 1961 included appearances in The Possessed with Marlon Brando , in The Outsider with Tony Curtis, and in Battle of the Blood Coast with Audie Murphy . This was followed by film offers in the 1970s, especially in westerns . In 1983 she was the mother of Tony Montana , played by Al Pacino , in the action drama Scarface by director Brian De Palma in front of the camera. In 2013, Colón played the role of Ultima in the drama Bless Me, Ultima , which is based on the novel of the same name by Rudolfo Anaya .
Míriam Colón lived in Albuquerque , New Mexico with her husband Fred Valle for the last few years of her life . She died in a New York hospital on March 3, 2017, at the age of 80, of complications from pneumonia .
Puerto Rican Traveling Theater
In the late 1960s, Colón and Roberto Rodríguez founded the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater on West 47th Street in Manhattan , New York. The company is presenting off-Broadway productions on location and is going on tour. She was the director of the theater and was on stage herself in the following productions:

Awards
- 1993 Colón received a Obie Award in the category of Lifetime Achievement in the Theater for their lifetime. Her biography, titled Miriam Colón - Actor and Theater Founder , was written by Mayra Fernandez.
- In 2000 she received the HOLA Raúl Juliá Founders Award , presented to her by the Hispanic Organization of Latin Actors (HOLA).
- In 2007 she was nominated for the Imagen Award .
