history

Karl Friedrich Esser received on 23 October 1945 by the American military government the license 5 for publishing a daily newspaper . The newspaper was entitled Mittelbayerische Zeitung - Regensburger Umschau and was initially only able to appear once a week due to a lack of paper and a lack of specialists. The edition had a volume of 4 pages and a circulation of 200,000 copies. The entire area of Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate was covered. The name "Mittelbayerische Zeitung" for the region in the middle of Bavaria, so to speak, was derived from this distribution area . The publishing house and the printer were located on Kumpfmühler Strasse in Regensburg. As a result of the relicensing, the Mittelbayerische Zeitung lost almost all of Lower Bavaria and the northern half of the Upper Palatinate. From 1958, all issues of the Mittelbayerische Zeitung appeared six times a week. In 1961, after Karl Friedrich Esser's death, his son Karl Heinz Esser took over responsibility for the family business. In 1973 the publisher took over the "Tages-Anzeiger", which had also been published in Regensburg. In 1998, after 30 years, the company's own weekly newspaper “Die Woche” was discontinued. After a new printing center in Margaretenstrasse in Regensburg had already been put into operation in 1993, the next new investment in a printing plant was relocated to the green meadow in Rathenaustrasse in the Harting district of Regensburg in 2010. The publisher invested around 50 million euros there. Three years later, on May 8, 2013, we moved into a new publishing house, the MZ-Medienhaus , at the Kumpfmühler Bridge in Regensburg, where 320 people are employed. In 2015 the publisher celebrated the 70th year of publication of the MZ.
