Gundam Seed ( Japanese 機動 戦 士 ガ ン ダ ム SEED , Kidō Senshi Gandamu Seed ) is a Japanese anime series and part of the Gundam universe. Like Gundam Wing, however , the series Gundam Seed takes place in its own series universe and does not follow its calendar. The series is continued by Kidō Senshi Gundam Seed Destiny .

prehistory

In the future, humanity will be divided in two. On the one hand there are the coordinators , genetically improved people with greater physical and mental potential and immunity to most diseases. On the other hand are the naturals , unmodified people. Over time, resentment against the coordinators due to racist movements like Blue Cosmos increased and urged them to relocate to space stations , the so-called PLANTs . After the war of reconstruction, the nation-states of the world had united in larger economic blocs and some of these, the so-called sponsorships, established the PLANT colonies. Over time, these became important production facilities and energy suppliers, but were not given any say. In addition, it is forbidden to produce food on the PLANT colonies in order to establish their dependence on the earth.

When energy production in the PLANT colonies collapsed after a terrorist attack by Blue Cosmos, the PLANT Supreme Council proposed that energy exports be temporarily suspended. However, the earth continues to insist on the fulfillment of export quotas, which leads to a serious supply crisis in the colonies. After a coordinated sabotage of energy production by PLANT engineers, the nations of the world dispatch a fleet to intimidate the PLANT colonists. ZAFT (Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty), which fights for the autonomy and self-administration of PLANT, receives enormous support. In addition, the development of mobile suits, combat robots and the upgrading of PLANT are secretly started.

Strengthened militarily, the PLANT Supreme Council votes for the autonomy of the colonies and for free trade and concludes treaties with the Oceanic Union and the United States of South America for the delivery of food. When the sponsorships learn of this, the immediate dissolution of the PLANT Supreme Council is required, which PLANT strictly rejects.

After the destruction of a food convoy en route from South America to the PLANT colonies, tensions intensified. ZAFT is now finally being converted into a military organization. When the colonies of Junius Seven to Junius Ten were converted into farms for food production, the situation came to a head, as sponsorships began with military intimidation maneuvers in the immediate vicinity of PLANT. In response, ZAFT attacks the Earth troops for the first time and drives them out of PLANT's territory. The PLANT Supreme Council is now demanding full autonomy and freedom of trade, and threatens the sponsorships with a complete export ban. At a subsequent meeting of the representatives of the PLANT Supreme Council with delegates from the sponsorships, a terrorist attack occurs in which a PLANT member is killed. Although the anti-coordinator terrorist group Blue Cosmos is committed to the attack, it quickly becomes known that the sponsorships were behind the attack. As a reaction to this, PLANT stops all exports to earth and there are supply bottlenecks in the sponsorships.

Another meeting is scheduled in the lunar colony of Copernicus , but terrorists attack the conference and kill the representatives of the sponsorships and the top management of the United Nations. Only the PLANT envoy survived due to a shuttle malfunction. The Earth Alliance that was formed as a result assumed PLANT to be involved in the attack and declared war. Soon after, a nuclear missile launched by Blue Cosmos destroys the agricultural PLANT colony of Junius Seven, killing many coordinators.

Due to the numerical superiority of the Earth Alliance, it was initially thought that the war would end quickly, but the more advanced technology from ZAFT, especially the mobile suits , and the physical superiority of the pilots of the mobile suits dragged the war out. In response to the nuclear bombardment, radical forces in ZAFT initially demanded the use of nuclear weapons against the earth, but this plan was not implemented under the impression of the destruction of Junius Seven. Instead, the Neutron Jammer was used, a device that suppresses the atomic chain reaction as it disrupts the movement of free neutrons. This means that neither side should be able to use nuclear weapons anymore. Then began a large-scale counter-attack by the ZAFT troops - Operation Uroboros .

In the first step, neutron jammers were thrown off, but they not only blocked the nuclear chain reaction in nuclear weapons, but also in nuclear power plants, which led to a global energy crisis and famine, the April Fool Crisis . In a second step, ZAFT units landed on earth and conquered large parts of Africa and Asia as well as Australia.

action

On Orb's Heliopolis space station in the United Emirates, the five prototypes of a new series of mobile suits, called G , are secretly being produced for the Earth Alliance, which, due to their technical capabilities, are supposed to stand up to ZAFT. But none of this goes unnoticed by ZAFT. An attack force led by the commander Rau le Creuset infiltrated the station with the order to steal the suits. The young student Kira Yamato, a coordinator who tried to escape the war with his parents in the peace of the colony , gets caught between the fronts and takes a protective position between the injured Earth Alliance soldier Ramius and a ZAFT soldier who turns out to be Athrun Zala, Kiras best friend from his childhood. Distracted by the recognition, Ramius Athrun manages to chase away and flee together with Kira and the Suit Strike .

Since both Kira and his friends witnessed the new mobile suit, they are forcibly recruited by Ramius and from then on try to flee from the ZAFT troops on the Archangel spacecraft prototype , which is also stationed in Heliopolis .

Characters

Kira Yamato A coordinator who grew up in the Heliopolis. He previously lived on the moon, where he met his best friend Athrun Zala. Kira flies the strike at the beginning and then gets the Freedom from Lacus Clyne, whom he loves. He and Cagalli are twins.

Athrun Zala He is a coordinator who fights for the ZAFT. He is the son of Patrick Zala and Lenore Zala, who died on Junius 7. His best friend is Kira Yamato, for whom he built a beep (a mechanical bird). He is engaged to Lacus Clyne at the beginning of the series. This engagement is broken up by Patrick Zala, as she is accused of treason by the Plants. He loves Cagalli, the daughter of the Orb representative. He first flies the stolen Aegis and then the Justice. In Gundam Seed Destiny he joins the ZAFT again and is stationed on the Minerva. There he flies the Savior.

Lacus Clyne She is a noted coordinator and future wife of Athrun. When she had to flee in an escape pod during an attack, she was rescued by Kira Yamato. She gives him the Freedom Gundam, whereupon she is pursued by ZAFT. Patrick Zala then ended their relationship. In the course of Gundam Seed and Destiny, she often sings sad songs. Like all coordinators, she owes her voice to genetic manipulation, which arouses mixed feelings among the members of the Arcangel.

Cagalli Yula Atthas Kira meets her for the first time when he visits his friends in the laboratory on the Heliopolis, only later does it become clear that she snuck in there to find out whether Orb actually developed Gundams for the Earth Alliance. The second time the crew of the Archangel Cagalli meets in Africa where Cagalli joins them, but their true identity is only dissolved when they reveal themselves so that the Archangel can land in Orb. Later she joins the alliance of the three ships with some orb troops. Whether Cagalli is a Natural or a Coordinator is never fully clarified.

Fllay Allster Fllay is actually a civilian on Orb. In the attack by ZAFT, she is recruited from the Archangel. When her father dies in an attack on ZAFT, she goes insane. From now on she hates the coordinator. Nevertheless, she loves Kira, with whom she is now together. She hopes that one day he will die in battle, like all Coordinators in her opinion, and secretly uses him to get her revenge through him. By starting an affair with him, she manages to make him fight like a berserk for the Archangel. She later leaves the Archangel and is killed by Rau Le Creuset in front of Kira's eyes. Then she appears to Kira one last time and forgives him and says that she will always be with him.

Rau Le Creuset He is a cardsharp and brings the world to the edge of nonexistence towards the end of the series by using Fllay to hand over the key to eternal peace to the President of Blue Cosmos without coming into the ZAFT's line of fire. He has a spiritual connection to Mu La Flaga (who feel each other when they are close to each other), because he is a clone of the father of Mu La Flaga, who has inherited him. He knows many of the coordinators' secrets, but only confides them to Kira and Mu. He ages prematurely and often needs medication. His mask disguises the latter.
