Monika Nothing (born May 22, 1942 in Pethau (part of Zittau since 1970 )) is a German writer , radio play author , painter , journalist and family advisor .

Life

Monika Nothing was born in Pethau in 1942. She grew up in Schlegel-Burkersdorf , a village near the Neisse , and then went to school in Ruhland . As a child and in school, she wrote fairy tales and poems. After leaving school, she began an apprenticeship as a laboratory assistant in the Lauchhammer hospital and then attended the medical school at the district hospital in Cottbus , where she graduated as a medical-technical assistant for laboratory and X-ray. She found her first job at the Klettwitz miners' hospital . Nothing then got a vacant position in the Lauchhammer hospital as a senior assistant (laboratory manager). She overcame her difficult everyday work by writing depressing things from her soul. But they settled down in writing circles of lignite Combine advise Lauchhammer. It was only in this phase of life that Nothing made up her Abitur at the adult education center and planned a distance learning course in biochemistry at the Technical University of Dresden , which the chief doctor refused to do because of the lack of staff and also because he did not consider a higher qualification necessary for a woman. After tough arguments, she left the hospital in 1976 and worked for a while at the district cabinet for cultural work and then as an editorial assistant for the company newspaper at VEB Schwermaschinenbau Lauchhammer . Now she began a distance learning course at the Literature Institute in Leipzig and worked for a year in the Bad Liebenwerda district editor of the Lausitzer Rundschau as an external editor.

Due to domestic constraints, she moved with her husband and daughter to a larger apartment in Schwarzheide in the Oberspreewald-Lausitz district . At her new place of residence she worked for the company newspaper of the Schwarzheide synthesis plant . From there she was delegated to the special women's class of the district party school of the SED for a year . For health reasons, Nothing stayed at home for two years. Then she began to work as a freelancer, providing song lyrics to a singing group and writing short stories, poems, a children's musical draft and a novel that, according to her own statement, failed and therefore rejected. Her mentor on the way to becoming a freelance author was the writer Erich Köhler . Her first book, the short story volume A Coat of Hope , was published in 1985 by Hinstorff Verlag Rostock and received great attention. She then received commissioned work such as the Senftenberg District Council to compile a collection of stories from the past and present around Lake Senftenberg .

Nothing later graduated in psychology . She has also made a name for herself as a painter under the pseudonym “RumoN”. Nothing lives and works as a freelance writer, painter and psychological family counselor in Schwarzheide. Her literary work includes several short stories, song texts, radio plays and scripts. But there was also a novel with the title To go to the roots , published in 1989 , in which a Pole followed in the footsteps of his father in the GDR at the end of the 1970s . Because of the representation of the Solidarność movement, Nothing was subjected to various reprisals in the year of the impending peaceful revolution in the GDR, including an operational identity check initiated by the Stasi .

reception

The GDR literary critics agreed and disagreed on two points . Nothing writes sensitively, said "-en" in Thuringia as well as in the Sächsische Neuesten Nachrichten and Sylvia Redlich in the Schweriner Volkszeitung . But “-en” found the style well mannered at times , which the morning reviewer Kirsten Sturm also judged. The poetic symbolism praised Sylvia Redlich, while Günter Ebert in Sunday looked at this as problematic. In the weekly post , Ilja Seifert highlighted the elaborate figure drawings, which Kirsten Sturm found rather inadequate.

The reviewer of the ver.di magazine Sprachrohr was touched by Nothing's contributions in the stories from the sandbox (2006) . They belonged, she wrote, to those in the anthology that “shake you but don't make you hopeless”.
