Mordechai Zipori

Mordechai Zipori ( Hebrew מרדכי צפורי, actually Mordechai Hankovitsch-Hendin , Hebrew מרדכי הנקוביץ`-הנדין; born on September  15, 1924 in Petah Tikva , League of Nations mandate for Palestine ; died on  May 29, 2017 in Tel HaShomer , Ramat Gan , Israel ) was an Israeli general and politician .

Life

Mordechai Zipori attended a religious school in Petah Tikva . From 1939 he was a member of the Zionist underground organization Irgun , and in 1945 he was arrested by the British for this reason and brought from Palestine to Eritrea, Kenya and Sudan. Although he managed to escape from a detention center in Eritrea, he was caught again and was imprisoned until 1948. After the establishment of the State of Israel , he became a professional soldier and served in the Israel Defense Forces from 1948 to 1976 . During his time in the army, he began to study at a military college. After graduating there in 1959, he studied at Tel Aviv University . His last rank was Brigadier General ( Tat-Aluf ).

Zipori was a Likud Knesset member from 1977 to 1984 . He was also deputy minister of defense in both the 18th and 19th governments from June 28, 1977 to October 10, 1983. He was in the 19th and 20th governments from August 5, 1981 to September 13, 1984 Communications minister .

Mordechai Zipori died on May 29, 2017 at the age of 92 at Sheba Medical Center in Tel HaShomer, Ramat Gan .
