Moritz von Beckerath (born May 2, 1838 in Krefeld , † September 17, 1896 in Munich ) was a German painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Moritz von Beckerath was a son of Wilhelm von Beckerath (1800–1865) and his wife Amalie, geb. Wolff (1802-1863). From 1854 he studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy with Carl Ferdinand Sohn , Heinrich Mücke and Christian Köhler and presumably privately with Eduard Bendemann , Joseph Kehren and Emanuel Leutze . In 1859 he went to Munich and worked there briefly with Moritz von Schwind and then self- employed. In 1863 he returned to Düsseldorf; In 1864/65 and 1886/87 he stayed in Rome . He preferred to paint dramatic situations from the history of the Middle Ages (including Alaric's burial in the river bed of the Busento ) . With Karl Andreä he participated from 1882 to 1891 in the frescoes of the converted cathedral St. Peter zu Pécs (Fünfkirchen) with scenes from the Old Testament and from the life of St. Paul. In 1865 he exhibited five drawings in Düsseldorf, and the following year two boxes for paintings. Napoleon's flight from Moscow followed in 1867 (1866). He belonged to the artists' association Malkasten in Düsseldorf from 1859 to 1861 and from 1866/67 to 1875. He is related to the painter Willy von Beckerath and to the painter Helene von Beckerath . Together with his sister Hedwig he appears in the painting Summer Night on the Rhine by Christian Eduard Böttcher .
