Moritz von Kunowski

Georg Karl Moritz von Kunowski (born April 25, 1831 in Berlin ; † March 9, 1917 ) was a Prussian major general and commander of the 50th Infantry Brigade (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) .

Life

Moritz was a son of the Prussian general of the infantry Eduard von Kunowski (1795-1870) and his wife Mathilde, née Braun (1806-1882).

Military career

Kunowski received his upbringing in his parents' house. After attending the Friedrichswerder high school , he joined the Guard Pioneer Department of the Prussian Army on October 1, 1849 as a one-year volunteer . There he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in July 1852 and served as a prime lieutenant from April 1862 to March 1863 for service in the Guard Fusilier Regiment . On March 5, 1863, he was transferred to the 4th Guards Regiment on foot . As regimental commander Kunowski took part in the battle near Fredericia as well as the siege and the assault on the Düppeler Schanzen in 1864 during the war against Denmark . For his behavior he was awarded the Red Eagle Order IV Class with Swords. Kunowski rose to captain and company commander on April 3, 1866 and took part in the war against Austria in the same year . During the war against France in 1870/71 he led his company in the battle of Gravelotte , the siege of Paris and in the battles near Montmagny , Stains and Le Bourget .

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, Kunowski advanced to major after the peace treaty and was transferred as battalion commander to the 3rd Grand Ducal Hessian (Leib Regiment) Infantry Regiment No. 117 in Mainz on February 14, 1874 . In this position he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on June 11, 1879 . On October 17, 1883, Kunowski was initially charged with commanding the 4th Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 72 under position à la suite . After being promoted to colonel , he acted as regimental commander from December 6, 1883 to July 9, 1888 and was then commissioned to lead the 50th Infantry Brigade (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) in Darmstadt . As a major general, he commanded this brigade from August 2, 1888, until he was finally put up for disposal on August 13, 1889 with the statutory pension .

He was a legal knight of the Order of St. John as well as a member of the Küstriner Freemason Lodge Friedrich Wilhelm zum Golden Scepter .

Kunowski married Jane Bolton Alcock (* 1842) on September 22, 1862 in Grindon Hall, England.
