The International College Morphomata : Genesis, Dynamics and Mediality of Cultural Figurations is a humanities research college based at the University of Cologne and funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the initiative "Freedom for the humanities" for the period 2009-2021 ( " Käte Hamburger Kolleg "). It is led by the literary scholar Günter Blamberger and the archaeologist Dietrich Boschung .

Research program

The Fellow College is supported by an advisory board . Every year, fellows from Germany and abroad conduct research together with scientists from Cologne on issues of cultural change. The first funding phase (2009-2015) was divided into two trienniums:

  • First triennium: morphomes of creativity / morphomes of orders of knowledge and conceptions of time
  • Second triennium: Morphomas of death / Morphomas of domination

In the second funding phase (2015–2021) the college will research the biography and the portrait as figurations of the special with an annual focus.

Derived from the Greek word "mórphôma", as it is said in the research program of the college, the basic term "morphome"

“Forms perceptible to the senses: structures, artefacts and figures in which our knowledge manifests itself. The core idea of the international college aims at these concretions and negotiates them, as it were, as conceptual images of historical and intercultural communication. "

In continuation of a lectureship for world literature established in 2009, Morphomata initiated a festival for world literature in 2015 under the title " Poetica ", which took place in January 2017 for the third time.

The research results of the college are published in two series by Wilhelm Fink Verlag . The names of the series are "Morphomata" and "Morphomata Lectures Cologne."
